CO2 Laser Resurfacing

What is Laser Resurfacing?

Laser skin resurfacing, also known as a laser peel, laser vaporization and lasabrasion, can reduce facial wrinkles, scars and blemishes. At Northland Plastic Surgery, we use a CO2 fractional laser.  If you choose to have laser resurfacing with us, a board certified plastic surgeon will perform your procedure.

Laser resurfacing involves directing short, concentrated pulsating beams of light at irregular skin to remove layers of damaged skin and reveal newer, healthier-looking skin. CO2 laser resurfacing is often used to treat facial wrinkles, scars from acne or other injuries and blemishes caused by sun exposure and aging. CO2 laser resurfacing can be performed on the entire face or just on specific areas.

Procedure and Recovery

Laser resurfacing is done as an outpatient procedure, which means you won’t have to stay in the hospital overnight. The procedure itself takes about 30 minutes to an hour. Before starting laser resurfacing, your surgeon will numb your skin with a local anesthetic. Once your skin is numb, your surgeon will direct the laser beam over the areas to be treated.  Some patients choose general anesthesia for their laser resurfacing rather than just local numbing.

You may experience some discomfort during CO2 laser resurfacing, but it can be controlled with medication. After the procedure, your skin will be red and swollen. You may also have some drainage from the treated area. Your surgeon will provide you with specific instructions on how to care for your skin during the healing process, which usually takes about two weeks.

CO2 laser resurfacing can give you noticeable results that last for many years. However, it’s important to keep in mind that the procedure is not perfect and you may still experience some wrinkles, scars or blemishes after treatment.

If you’re considering CO2 laser resurfacing, it’s important to consult with one of our board certified plastic surgeons to discuss your goals and expectations for the procedure. Contact us today to schedule your consultation.
