Breast Lift

What is a Breast Lift?

A breast lift, also known as mastopexy, raises the breasts by removing excess skin and tightening the surrounding tissue to reshape and support the new breast contour. A breast lift can rejuvenate your figure with a breast profile that is more youthful and uplifted. A woman’s breasts often change over time, losing their youthful shape and firmness. These changes and loss of skin elasticity can result from pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight fluctuations, aging, gravity or heredity.

Procedure

There are several different types of incisions that can be used for a breast lift. The technique that’s right for you will be determined by the degree of lift needed, your breast size and shape, skin elasticity and the placement of your areolas and nipples.

You will be given specific instructions on how to prepare for surgery, including guidelines on eating and drinking, smoking cessation for those who smoke, and taking or avoiding certain vitamins and medications.

The surgery usually takes two to three hours, depending on the extent of the procedure. You will be given general anesthesia or intravenous sedation and local anesthesia.

Breast Lift Recovery

After your breast lift surgery, you will be taken to a recovery area where you will be closely monitored. You will probably feel groggy and some discomfort as the anesthesia wears off. Your breasts will be wrapped in gauze dressings and an elastic bandage or support bra will minimize swelling and support your breasts as they heal.  A small, thin tube may be temporarily placed under the skin to drain any excess blood or fluid.

You will be able to go home the same day as your surgery. It is important to have someone drive you home and stay with you at least the first night after surgery.
