Chin Augmentation

What is a Chin Augmentation?

Chin surgery, or mentoplasty, is a surgical procedure to reshape the chin. Sometimes bone from the jaw itself can be moved forward in an operation called a mentoplasty or genioplasty. Alternatively, shaped silicone implants can be used to give more projection to the chin. Conversely, bone can be removed to decrease an overly projecting chin. Furthermore, modifications to the upper and/or lower jaw can be advised for improved chewing dynamics and occlusion—or how the teeth fit together. These operations can range from simple to very complex.

Best Candidates

The best candidates for chin surgery are those who have a chin that is too small or recessed in relation to the rest of the face. This can result in a “weak chin” or an “undefined jawline.” Mentoplasty can also be used to correct birth defects, such as a cleft chin, or to improve the look of a scar.

Chin Augmentation Procedure

Chin augmentation often takes between one and two hours to perform, although more complex cases can take longer. It can be performed under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia. Recovery time is usually quick, with most patients able to return to their normal activities within a few days.

Chin augmentation is performed through incisions inside the mouth or, more commonly, under the chin. The skin is then lifted off the underlying bone and soft tissue. If bone needs to be removed, this can be done with a chisel. If an implant is being placed, a small pocket is created either on top of the chin bone or underneath the chin muscle. The implant is then inserted and the incisions are closed with sutures.

If you are considering chin surgery, it is important to consult with a board-certified plastic surgeon who has experience performing this procedure. Contact us today to schedule a consultation with one of our experienced plastic surgeons.
