Liposuction

What is Liposuction?

Liposuction has become one of the most popular elective surgeries performed today. This procedure, sometimes referred to as lipo, slims and reshapes specific areas of the body by removing excess fat deposits and improving your body contours and proportion. Liposuction is a surgical procedure that uses a suction technique to remove fat from specific areas of the body, such as the abdomen, hips, thighs, buttocks, arms or neck. If you are bothered by excess fat deposits located anywhere on your body that don’t respond to diet or exercise, lipo may be right for you. This is not a treatment for obesity or a substitute for proper diet and exercise. It is also not an effective treatment for cellulite—the dimpled skin that typically appears on the thighs, hips and buttocks—or loose saggy skin.

Best Candidates

Liposuction can be performed on men and women of all ages. The best candidates for liposuction are people of relatively normal weight who have localized areas of fat that they would like removed. You should also be in good physical and mental health, with no active medical conditions.

Liposuction Procedure

Before you undergo liposuction surgery, your surgeon will review your medical history and conduct a physical examination. He or she will also assess your skin tone and elasticity and the amount and location of fat deposits. You should also have realistic expectations about the results of liposuction.

During the surgery, small, thin tubes are inserted through tiny incisions in your skin. The cannulas are attached to a vacuum device that suctions out the fat. Liposuction can be performed under general anesthesia, meaning you will be asleep during the procedure, or under local anesthesia, meaning you will be awake but sedated.

The amount of time it takes to perform liposuction depends on the number and size of the areas being treated. Most liposuction procedures take between one and three hours to complete.

Recovery

You will likely experience some bruising, swelling and soreness after the procedure. Your surgeon will provide you with specific instructions on how to care for yourself as you recover. Most people take one to two weeks off from work and avoid strenuous activity for at least four to six weeks.

Lipo is a one treatment procedure and requires supportive wear following the procedure. Click here to check out our vlog on Liposuction.
