Arm Lift (Brachioplasty)

What is an Arm Lift?

An arm lift, or brachioplasty, is a surgical procedure that reduces excess sagging skin, tightens and smoothes the underlying supportive tissue that defines the shape of the upper arm and reduces localized pockets of fat in the upper arm region. Brachioplasty surgery may be right for you if the underside of your upper arms are sagging or appear loose and full due to excess skin and fat.

A brachioplasty is a cosmetic surgical procedure to improve the appearance of the under portion of your upper arms. During this procedure excess skin and fat are removed from between the armpit and elbow. The remaining skin is placed back over the newly repositioned contours to create a more toned look.

Procedure

An arm lift procedure is performed under general anesthesia and usually takes one to two hours. The incision length and pattern will be determined based on the amount and location of excess skin to be removed. Incisions are usually placed on the inside or back of the upper arm in an effort to minimize visible scarring.

After the brachioplasty, you will be wrapped in a compression garment or elastic bandages. These help to minimize swelling and support your arms as they heal. You will likely experience some pain and bruising after the surgery, which can be controlled with medication. Most brachioplasty patients stay one night in the hospital before being discharged home.

Recovery

You will need to take it easy for the first few days of your arm lift recovery. Avoid any strenuous activity or lifting anything heavier than 10 pounds for at least four weeks. You should be able to return to work and other normal activities within two weeks, although you may need to limit arm movement for several weeks.

The surgery results are usually long-lasting, provided you maintain a healthy weight and lifestyle. It is important to keep in mind that future weight gain or loss can affect the arm lift results. Pregnancy can also cause the skin to stretch and may diminish the brachioplasty results.

If you are considering brachioplasty surgery, consult with one of our board certified plastic surgeons to discuss your goals.
