When Emergency Surgery Is Needed
Immediate surgical treatment is necessary when there is a severe crush injury, open fractures, large contaminated wounds, or an injured artery.
Hand Injuries Can Hide Deeper Damage
Trauma to the hand is common both at work and at home. Injuries range from simple skin wounds to large crush injuries, de-gloving injuries where skin is peeled back, and amputations. Seemingly insignificant skin wounds can sometimes mask deeper injuries to tendon, nerve, or vascular structures.
Isolated Tendon and Nerve Injuries
Most isolated tendon and nerve injuries can be treated as non-emergencies. In many cases, our physicians ask the referring physician to close the skin wounds and schedule surgery within three to ten days.
Common Traumatic Injuries
Accidents are the number one cause of trauma requiring surgical intervention. The injuries we treat fall into a few broad categories.
Head and Neck Trauma
Vehicle and ATV accidents can fracture the face, requiring surgery to realign bones, skin, and teeth and restore both function and appearance. Dog bites can cause significant soft tissue injury that calls for complex closures, so lips still work properly to eat and talk and eyelids close without excess scarring.
Gunshot wounds are less common but often life altering, requiring complicated repairs of major structures in the face and head.
Trunk and Lower Extremity Trauma
Falls from ladders, high machinery, or roofs are frequent sources of trauma to the trunk and legs, as are motorcycle accidents, which often involve gravel, loss of skin, or broken bones. Explosions from tires, factory machinery, or combustibles like fireworks can cause burns, cuts, or muscle defects. We treat these wounds in conjunction with regional orthopedic surgeons.
Hand Trauma
Hands are complex, and your surgeon has specialized training to restore as much function as possible. Injuries range from delicate bones broken in physical altercations to power saw and knife cuts that damage the nerves, blood vessels, or tendons that bend and straighten your fingers.
Crush injuries between two objects, such as a boat and trailer, are also commonly treated. With most hand injuries, you will also work with a specialized therapist after surgery to help restore function once you are healed.
