Male Breast Reduction (Gynecomastia)
When is Male Breast Reduction Needed?
Gynecomastia is a condition of overdeveloped or enlarged breasts in men that can occur at any age. The condition can be the result of hormonal changes, heredity, obesity or the use of certain drugs. Gynecomastia surgery reduces breast size in men, flattening and enhancing the chest contours. In severe cases of gynecomastia, the weight of excess breast tissue may cause the breasts to sag and stretch the areola. In these cases the position and size of the areola can be surgically improved and excess skin may be reduced.

Procedure
Male breast reduction surgery is usually performed as an outpatient procedure, meaning you won’t have to stay in the hospital overnight. The surgery will be performed under general anesthesia, which means you’ll be asleep during the surgery.
The surgeon will make an incision in the natural crease line of your armpit, around the areola or along the lower edge of the breast. Through this incision, excess glandular tissue, fat and skin will be removed and the breast will be reshaped. In some cases, liposuction may be used to remove excess fat. The incisions will then be closed with stitches or surgical tape.
Recovery and Results
After male breast reduction surgery, you’ll likely feel sore and your chest will be swollen and bruised. You’ll be given pain medication to help with the discomfort.
Most men can return to work within a week, but you’ll need to avoid strenuous activity for at least four to six weeks. You’ll also need to wear a compression garment around your chest for four to six weeks to help with healing and support your new chest contour.
Male breast reduction surgery is usually successful in reducing or eliminating gynecomastia. However, in some cases the condition may return, especially if you gain weight or use certain drugs that can cause gynecomastia. If you have any concerns about your surgery or your results, be sure to talk to your doctor.
