Reconstructive microsurgery is a surgical discipline in which specialized operating microscopes and precision instrumentation are used to repair intricate structures such as blood vessels and nerves less than a few millimeters in diameter.
It restores function and form for patients affected by trauma, cancer, and congenital conditions, and makes possible delicate work like tissue restoration and the reattachment of limbs and digits.
Northland Plastic Surgery physicians are the only plastic surgeons in the region, covering all of northern Minnesota, northern Wisconsin, and upper Michigan, who perform microsurgery, including the replantation of digits and limbs.
When It's Performed
The surgeons of Northland Plastic Surgery use reconstructive microsurgery for breast cases such as a DIEP reconstruction, for lower extremity salvage, on the head and neck, and commonly in the hand.
When the tip of a finger is cut off or crushed in an injury, it can often be allowed to heal with proper wound care.
In some cases, a flap or graft may be used to replace lost tissue.
